Each year since December 23, 1997 the day Dan O'Keefe created for the show Sienfield, Festivus has been celebrated. Festivus is a day put aside to air grievances. The purpose was to provide a way to celebrate the holiday season without the pressures and commercialism the Christmas season has become beginning in October and lasting through December 24, Christmas Eve.
The irony of this comical creation is that it has scriptural foundation.
Matthew 5: 23 - 24
23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
The celebration of Christmas
Luke 2: 8 - 14
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
How can we celebrate the birth of the Christ if a brother, sister, friend, family member, work peer or anyone has a grievance against you. Our true gift cannot be bought or sold. It is the Grace of God our Father. There is no pressure or commercialism. All we need is faith and the desire to live Christ like. Forgiveness is commanded.
December 23 is the eve of the Day we begin the celebration of the life saving gift God sent to us, the birth of His son Christ our Lord and Savior. What a wonderful opportunity to let all the worldly negativism go by seeking forgiveness and forgiving those that hurt us.
Happy Festivus
